The reasons for this were twofold, the first being that the unibody construction made the older Thunderbirds expensive to repair after collision damage and meant that rusting affected the structural integrity of the car, and secondly that as the Thunderbird became bigger it became less and less suited for building that way. That changed in 1967, when the Thunderbird took the seeming retrograde step of reverting to the classic body on frame style, like most American cars of the period. Body on Frame constructionĪll previous Thunderbirds had unibody (or monocoque) construction, in which the body structure itself is the load-bearing member, rather than a seperate, rigid chassis frame. It was this very difference, the change from an inoffensive but attractive style to one that's aggressive, fast, uncompromising and polarizing, that I think played the largest part in the rejection of the 1967 models and later by the Thunderbird aficionado. The tail-lights were full width, and featured sequential turn signals.Ĭertainly the 1967 to 1969 Thunderbirds, that shared the same basic styling, have a look that is unique. The body lines were sleekly curved, humped over the rear wheels in what was becoming the fashion, and the tail was swept back, the outer edges being behind the center in a shallow vee. In reality, the outboard parts of this were retractable covers over the headlights, the Thunderbird being one of the first cars with this feature. A large oval air intake was the major front-end feature, taking up almost the whole width of the car and filled with a seemingly full-width grille. The Ford stylists took their inspiration from jet aircraft for the front end, particularly USAF fighter jets with great gaping nose intakes such as the F-100 Super Sabre. In many respects, the '67 look was a forerunner of 1970s muscle car style, with no small amount of aggression. It has a somewhat European look to it from certain angles, particularly from the front, and it was no bad looker from the back, either.ġ967's Thunderbird, on the other hand, looked like nothing else at the time, and its very striking looks are definitely in the ' love it or hate it' category. Attractive and sporty looking, and with a knack for seeming a much smaller, nimbler car than it really was, it's really hard to hate the '66 styling. The 1966 model, while not the most striking Thunderbird ever, certainly drew few detractors in the looks department. Let's examine the changes in the 1967 model year compared to the 1966 Ford Thunderbird. I must admit to substantial bias up front I own a '67 myself. So what happened in the 1967 model year that was so awful? Is the opinion of the vast majority of car enthusiasts and Thunderbird fans a valid one? In fact, you'd be forgiven for believing there were no Thunderbirds between '66 and a few 1990s ones you still see kicking around. Save for the few ultra-purists who would rather forget about any Thunderbird produced after 1957 and the ending of two-seater production, the opinion is nigh-on universal. A web site about Thunderbird history produced at the time of the 2002 model year T-Bird relaunch mentions nothing between that year and the modern day, and it's the same with many unofficial web sites, parts dealers, catalogs, clubs and events. Even the Ford Motor Company, it seems, likes to pretend these days that the Ford Thunderbird line ended in 1966. Newton’s second law gives them a way to do this.Īs NASA covers in their Rocket Principles lesson, the higher a rocket’s propellant mass, the faster the gas in the rocket’s chamber can escape, generating a greater amount of thrust at launch. In short, rocket scientists must consider all of a rocket’s components (which make up its mass) to calculate the amount of force required to accelerate the rocket into space (must reach escape velocity, a speed of over 25,014 mph). This is why a rocket lifts off slowly at first, then speeds up. So, in keeping with Newton’s second law of motion, the rocket’s acceleration increases as its mass decreases. Thus, the rocket’s mass becomes smaller as the rocket ascends. The engines burn the propellant to fuel the rocket, using it all up until it is gone. During launch, a controlled explosion occurs, and gas is vented from the opening in the chamber, generating thrust and propelling the rocket in the opposite direction of the escaping gas- up to space.īut as a rocket lifts off, something happens to its mass. Simply put, a rocket is essentially a large chamber that holds gas under pressure with a small opening to vent the gas at liftoff. However, the largest part of a rocket’s mass goes to the solid and/or liquid propellant. It might not be the first thing you think about while watching a rocket blast off, but these spectacular events make for a great teachable moment in physics.Ī rocket’s mass is comprised of many different components – engines, payload, propellants, and more. Have you ever watched a rocket launch and wondered how such a massive object can lift off the Earth and into space? Would you have guessed that Newton’s second law of motion can help explain exactly what we see during launch? The above equation, F=ma, assumes a constant mass.įor objects that do not have a constant mass, the differential form of the equation is used, where the force is equivalent to an object’s change in momentum over time, or F=(m1V1-m0V0)/(t1-t0). Watch the STEMonstration clip below to watch NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik demonstrate Newton’s second law of motion onboard the International Space Station (ISS):īut what if an object’s mass isn’t constant? Well, that’s where things get interesting. Lastly, the mass of an object is the amount of matter that an object contains, and unlike weight, this quantity will not change with location. Acceleration can be defined as an object’s change in velocity over time, considering both speed and direction. However, it might help to first define these terms.Ī force is simply a push or pull acting upon an object. To put things simply, an object’s acceleration is dependent upon the amount of force that is applied to it, and its mass. Newton’s second law can be summed up in a simple mathematical equation where Force (F) is equivalent to the mass of an object (m) multiplied by its acceleration (a), or F=ma. Today, we are taking a closer look at Newton’s second law and how it can be applied to human spaceflight. Each month, in our new Science in Action series we uncover the science behind spaceflight.Ĭhances are, you’ve heard of Newton’s three laws of motion. Looking beyond the lyrics, you can find huge melodic screams and a sung bridge, a moment of reprieve from the blistering intensity of this unforgiving album. Sam Carter brings out amazing melodies in his violent screams (giving the music tastes of melodic death metal) while still finding moments in between to bring in softer moments. Vocally, this may be Architects' best material yet. This album begs for multiple listens once through for the epic instrumentals, and a second to appreciate the lyrical work on it. It's 46 minutes of unadulterated intensity and raw emotion. It's as hard as it is to explain as it is to comprehend. The music on All Our Gods is giant, atmospheric, and crushing while still being melodic and technical. It's definitely metal, but somewhere along the lines, they formed something new. In their seventh record, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, post-hardcore/metal outfit Architects seamlessly find the compromise of those two types of metal.Īfter a decade of evolution, Architects have settled on a sound that's hard to wrap your head around. My love and presence will always be with you, even when we are physically separated. There are two ways good metal can go: with heaviness comes brutality and jams, or with heaviness comes beauty and connectivity. I will always be there to support you and give you strength, even when I am not present. If I am not physically with you, know that I am still there for you in spirit. I am committed to seeing our relationship/friendship through, even if it gets tough. I will always keep my promises and be there for you, no matter what. The sound of my voice will always remind you of the love and friendship we shared. If you ever miss me or feel alone, just listen to this song and know that I am always here for you. In the event that I pass away before you, I want you to know that I will always be with you in spirit. I am proud of you and everything that you have accomplished. Your happiness and well-being are my top priorities, and I will do whatever it takes to help you achieve them. When you are feeling sad or helpless, I will be there for you to lift you up. I will always be by your side, no matter what. We can pretend that our love and friendship will never end, just to make each other feel happy and loved. We are aware that everything in life is temporary, and we need to make the most of it while we can.Įven though we know everything comes to an end, let's cherish the love we have for each other like it will last forever. Out of everyone in the world, you are the most important person in my life.Įverything we do together will be worth it and meaningful. I will be the one to comfort you and give you emotional support. I don't want to repeat myself, but I still mean everything I said. I have expressed my feelings to you before. I am ready and willing to help you whenever you need it. If you ever need me or feel down, I am here for you to catch you and support you. You are unforgettable to me, and I will always have you in my thoughts. I am fully committed to this relationship/friendship. The lyrics express a desire to be there for their loved one, regardless of the situation, and a belief that love can last forever. Overall, the song delivers a message of love, devotion, and commitment to a loved one. They want to see the relationship through, even if they are not physically present. The last verse of the song speaks of the singer's voice being a constant presence, singing the song to their loved one, and never letting them down. The lyrics express that the singer will always be their loved one's friend and will make every moment spent together worth it because they know that life is finite. They promise to catch their loved one if they ever fall and will always be standing next to them, even during their toughest moments. The chorus declares that the singer is all in and could never forget their loved one. The lyrics suggest that the singer is willing to be there for their loved one, even in the darkest of times. The lyrics to Polyphia Killstation's song "Memento Mori" speak of devotion and commitment to a loved one. The plainest option is input-modulates-input, which goes from a phased-type sound at low intensities to a crunchy, gritty distortion as the intensity is increased. This can work particularly well with rhythmic parts and loops.Īt all strengths, the sound is heavily influenced by the algorithm being used. Getting the effect amount perfectly balanced around this point can create some hugely dynamic effects, as small changes in the input signal lead to big timbral changes in the plug-in’s output. Phase Mutant has a similar characteristic in that, at low strength settings, the effect can be quite harmonious and musical, but as the intensity and amount are increased a point is reached where things flip quickly into dirtiness and mayhem. If you’ve ever programmed an FM synth, you’ll be familiar with how, when increasing the level of an FM modulator, you hit a threshold beyond which the onset of dirt and distortion is rapid. The step sequencer always syncs to your host DAW, but unfortunately does not also have a freewheeling mode.īLEASS Phase Mutant LFO + EG Hybrid sounds This allows you to create highly complex, constantly changing modulations that are nonetheless rhythmic and looped. The step sequencer is an advancement of the Motion Sequencer found on BLEASS’ Alpha, Omega and SampleWiz 2 synths, allowing you to add differently-shaped curves to each step of the sequence rather than just static values. There is no threshold level for this trigger instead, a gain control is used to adjust the sensitivity. The envelope generator is of a simple attack-release variety and is triggered by transients in the input signal. The LFOs offer a range of six waveforms and can run freely or be synced to your DAW. Each can be mapped to any two of Phase Mutant’s parameters. In Phase Mutant, that modulation strength is determined by an intensity setting – light, medium or extreme – coupled with an Amount dial that gives finer control within the chosen intensity setting.īorrowing from BLEASS’ stable of instruments, Phase Mutant includes two LFOs, an envelope generator, and a step sequencer, all of which act as modulation sources (parameter modulation, that is, not frequency modulation!). And, as in FM, the overall sonic impact is determined by how strongly the modulator is modulating the carrier. In essence, the first item in each pairing is the modulator and the second is the carrier. Phase Mutant’s three different routing options – input modulates oscillator, oscillator modulates input, and input modulates input – are treated as FM algorithms. The plug-in can also shift the phase of the left and right channels in order to create stereo widening effects.īLEASS Phase Mutant sequencer Modulating the modulation More tonal changes can be created by changing the oscillator’s waveform, which can morph from a sine wave, through triangle and sawtooth waves, to a square wave. The speed at which the oscillator’s frequency changes can be further controlled with attack and release controls. The tracking response time can be adjusted too, which at low settings helps to smooth out small pitch fluctuations, and at higher settings causes the oscillator’s pitch to lag behind the input pitch, to fascinating effect. The pitch detector can affect the left, the right, or the summed left and right channels of the input signal. Although this does create useful changes in the resulting sound, especially when the parameter is being modulated or automated, it’s a shame it isn’t possible to dial in a bigger pitch offset too. And, in good ol’ FM style, this base frequency is then multiplied by a pitch ratio, with different ratios resulting in different harmonics being introduced into the effected signal.Īn additional +/- 50 cent tweak of fine-tuning can be dialled-in to the oscillator’s pitch, too. The base frequency of Phase Mutant’s oscillator is tracked from the input signal so that it always maintains a pitch relationship to that signal. |
